Taking a Card Payment at the POS
Taking a Card Payment at the POS
Processing card payments at the Point of Sale is fast and straightforward.
Step by Step
- Ring up the customer's items in the POS
- Click Payment (or press the payment shortcut key)
- Select the Credit Card (NMI) payment method
- The payment terminal or card entry screen appears
- The customer swipes, taps, or inserts their card (or you key in the number for phone orders)
- Wait for authorization — the POS will show "Approved" or "Declined"
- If approved, the sale is complete — print the receipt
Split Payments
If a customer wants to pay part cash and part card:
- On the payment screen, select Cash first and enter the cash amount
- The remaining balance updates automatically
- Select Credit Card (NMI) for the remaining amount
- Process the card payment
Tip: If a card is declined, ask the customer to try another card. Common decline reasons: insufficient funds, daily spending limit reached, or the bank flagged the transaction for fraud (the customer may need to call their bank).
